Ian Everest – Guest Speaker
Some forty years ago Ian Everest started out on the journey of researching his family history and just like many others who embark on the same path, his life has never been the same since! It brought about change of career into an occupation which was directly related to his family history research and took him to places in this country and overseas where his family line very nearly came to an end. Little did he know when he first visited the West Sussex Record Office all those years ago, that he would be coming back to deliver a talk that has its roots well and truly in his family tree.

Ian was brought up in a farm on the South Downs and after attending Agricultural College in the late 1960’s, he worked on a farm before joining the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food at an animal disease research centre in Surrey. His growing interest in family and military history led to a career change in 1987 when I was appointed manager of Newhaven Fort in Sussex, a scheduled monument which he prepared for public opening the following year and continued to manage for fifteen years. Following another ten years as the Town Clerk in the same town, he retired from full-time work and now spends much of his time giving talks and researching family and local history.
His talk on October 31st will look at the Women’s Land Army and some connections with Sussex. Often referred to as the Cinderella’s of the Fields, Ian will explain how he first became interested in the Women’s Land Army and how this led to many years of research and collecting 100’s of photos of the Land Girls working on the land. His talk will look at its history – how it was started, it’s role during two world wars and its recognition in more recent times. A wide range of photos will show the women at work and look at the huge contribution they made to feeding the country at time of war.

If you would like to attend this Tuesday Talk on 31 October at 7pm, please call our Reception on 01243 753602 to book your in-person ticket. Tickets cost £8 (£7 for West Sussex Archives Society members). Please note, this will be an in-person event only.
