By Alan Green – Guest Speaker
In this talk local historian and author Alan Green will, with the aid of Stella Palmer’s slides and some others, take you on a tour of the city as it was fifty years ago; a city preparing for pedestrianisation but still ruled by the motor car. You will see shops and businesses that have long since passed into memory and – who knows – you might even spot yourself in the background!

At the beginning of the 1970s colour photography was still relatively expensive so most photographers carried on using black and white film. Colour in newspapers was still a long way off and as a result of this we seem to remember the era as if seen through black-and-white spectacles.

During this era the late Stella Palmer, a member of Chichester Local History Society, took a large number of colour slides of Chichester which enable us to travel back to the 1970s city and see it in a different light.

If you would like to explore Chichester’s past in colour you can join us at the Record Office on Tuesday 28th November 2023 at 7pm by calling 01243 753602 to book an in-person ticket for £8 (£7 for WSAS members).
